Washington Avenue Nightlife"A little strip that's seen a big boom in bars and nightclubs."
Washington Avenue nightlife is a scene that you just can't miss. There are an ungodly number of bars and night clubs on Washington Avenue. And when I say ungodly, I mean that in the nicest possible way. In the past 5 years Washington Avenue nightlife has gone from a few live music venues to 30 bars in 10 blocks! Want to see for yourself? Check out the map. The abundance of bars and clubs clustered on Washington Avenue has earned it the nickname of "Houston's 6th Street" (in reference to Austin's infamous party street). Frankly, the Washington Corridor has a long way to go to match Austin's 6th street, but it's still a great nightlife scene for young professionals. There's a lot more to Washington Avenue Nightlife than the posh lounges that it is generally known for. There's also a growing number of sports bars, wine bars, lounges, and nightclubs for young professionals interested in a more moderate night out. There are even a few places where you can get in wearing your flip flops or sneakers. Parking and traffic are chaotic. But what else would you expect with such a big crowd flocking to bars that have appeared practically overnight? You can always catch The Washington Wave, a shuttle service between local businesses. Get an all night pass for only $8, and park in their free lot. If you haven't visited Washington Avenue then you are missing out! Browse through the information below to find the bars, lounges, and clubs that fit your style and get ready or a good night. Written for HNS by Kristy Venable
Pretentious or Hot? You Decide. The Washington Corridor has a reputation as the place for Houston's pretty people. There are several high end ultra lounges with extremely strict door policies that cater to professionals with plenty of cash to blow.
Here's a video of Citizen Lounge, one of the most exclusive clubs on Washington Avenue.
Which is hotter, Washington Avenue or Midtown? That's a matter of debate. Midtown has a lot of well established favorites while Washington Avenue is often seen as too trendy. But, it's up to you to decide. Personally, I like them both. Variety is the spice of life, right? Some of Washington Avenue's Best Bars and Clubs:Block 7 is a casual wine bar that offers wine education and a 35 foot tasting bar. Their prices are reasonable. Blue Label Lounge is a Washington Avenue dance club that caters to the exotic and attractive people of Houston. A decadent atmosphere and renowned DJs make this nightclub a sure bet for a great night out. Branch Water Tavern is a dimly lit and luxurious restaurant and bar near Washington Avenue with comfy leather couches and a gourmet menu. Corkscrew Wine Bar has one of the best wine selections in Houston with over 250 wines available by the glass. They offer home-made truffles, appetizers, steak night, and other great events. Cova is a unique wine bar in a wine retail store with over 1,000 wines. Try their wine flight! Cova serves award winning food and has great specials on various nights of the week. Eight Lounge is a trendy night club on Washington Avenue. It has a Hollywood feel with a red carpet, rooftop bar, finger foods, great DJs, and a packed dance floor with blasts of cold nitrogen. Dubliner is the only Irish pub on Washington Avenue. They have a large, secluded patio that is great for groups; an internet jukebox with a huge selection; friendly staff; and daily industry specials. Max's Wine Dive serves fine wines and home-style comfort foods turned gourmet. This is one of the most fun wine bars in Houston. Max's is relaxed like a dive bar, but don't let the name fool you; it's no dive. This is actually a very trendy and popular bar on the busy Washington Avenue strip. Pearl Bar on Washington Avenue has a sexy lounge inside with great DJs and a large patio. Don't miss out on beer pong. Rebels Honky Tonk is the newest country bar on Washington Avenue. Everything is Texas sized from the chairs to the dance floor. The bartenders are knock-outs in their cut off jean shorts and boots. Reign Lounge is a hot dance club with South Beach style decor and great DJs. It's all about luxury and cutting loose at Reign. Sawyer Park is a trendy new sports bar on the Washington Avenue strip in the Houston Heights. They offer nightly events including karaoke, bingo, live music, DJs, and BBQ and snow cones on Sunday. Taps House of Beer is Washington Avenue's ultimate beer and sports bar. There's 100 beers on tap, 100 ounce pitchers, and a large patio with bocce ball. Washington Avenue Drinkery is a new bar by the owners of Corskscrew with a unique interior, live bands on some weeknights, and only Texas beers on tap. Try their famous WAD shooters. All About Washington Avenue in Houston"Washington" is about a 3 mile stretch along Washington Avenue that is the "it" place to be. It runs from the outskirts of downtown and parallel to Interstate 10.About a year ago Washington had nothing more than a few restaurants and bars. Now Washington is full of the hottest bars and trendiest clubs. It is now the place to be on a weekend night. This hot street attracts the people who are always looking for the next best thing. Washington is now full of great bars and amazing restaurants. Up and down Washington there is always something to do, but beware that on the weekend nights it can get crazy. If you are going to be out drinking and dancing the night away I suggest you take a cab. On the weekends places charge about $15 for parking (ouch)! I always take a cab when going out on Washington Avenue. There are so many cops out just looking to bust somebody for drinking and driving. Keep it safe and have a fun night...so take a cab! What is great about Washington Avenue Nightlife is that there is something for everybody: The Corkscrew Wine Bar, Pearl Bar, Max's Wine Dive, Taps House of Beers and Sawyer Park Bar. There are many more bars and clubs to choose from and all of them have different and fun events nightly. There is always something to do on Washington Avenue. I love going to Taps House of Beers on Tuesday nights when they have their big Texas beer night (only $2 and $4). Try going to Sawyer Park to catch your sports team on a huge projection screen while gazing out at the rest of the Avenue from their upstairs patio. Written for HNS by Alexandra Kuchik

TipNot only is Washington Avenue popular with young party goers, it is just as popular for police officers...on the job. Cabs are the way to go! Save $ on parking and on a DWI. |
