"Montrose Houston Nightlife is charming, quirky,
and a guaranteed good time."

Montrose Houston Nightlife, dive bars Houston

Montrose Houston Nightlife is best known as a popular area for gay bars; including the hugely popular after hours club South Beach.

Montrose Houston Nightlife is also known for its dive bars and live music venues. If you're looking for a unique nightlife experience then I highly recommend visiting Montrose.

Some of Houston's best live music venues are in Montrose including the nearly famous Anderson Fair which is one of the oldest folk venues in the U.S. McGonigel's Mucky Duck is another great live music venue with an Irish pub atmosphere.

The Montrose community itself is diverse and trendy. It has a charming atmosphere with many historic homes and buildings.

Here's a brief video by Sunset Productions to introduce you to Montrose.
There's a great clip of the famous South Beach dance floor.

Some of Montrose' Best Bars and Pubs:

Absinthe Brasserie has an intimate, relaxed atmosphere that tends toward the dark and mysterious. They have specialty pizzas, paninis, appetizers, and quesadillas. And most importantly, of course, they have several types of Absinthe and 6 Absinthe cocktails on their menu.

Catbirds is a unique and down to earth bar that has been around for years. It's popular with NTN trivia players, and plays jazz and blues music. Enjoy a drink with friends on their patio.

Etro Lounge plays 80's music but has a newer look. They play movies and Atari on the big screen. It has 2 floors, a patio, dance floor, relaxed atmosphere, no line, no cover, and no attitude.

Harp is a local tradition. This home turned bar has a cozy feeling and a staff that will truly make it your second home. Their large back patio is a big bonus.

Lola's Depot is perhaps the best dive bar in Houston, and it is truly a dive. It has a unique atmosphere. You will just have to visit it and see. Happy hour from 5-7pm and 9-11pm with $1.75 wells.

Marfreless is an unmarked bar in the Montrose/River Oaks area that is known as a couples hang-out due to its romantic atmosphere and cozy couches. Do not be surprised to see smooching couples and anxious first dates.

Next Door is dive bar with cozy couches and a laid-back, dark and artsy atmosphere. This is the perfect place to grab a last call drink or to visit after a show at Rudyard's Pub.

Poison Girl is a quirky little dive bar. The patio has a backyard feel with (oddly) a Cabbage Patch Doll statue hiding in the bushes. They have pinball machines and $3 Jager all the time.

Pravada is a classy, diverse nightclub with great DJs and a dance floor that is always hopping. You can also enjoy the cozy lounge area around the dance floor and the patio.

Tavern on Gray has lots of entertainment; pool, foosball, air hockey, ping pong, beer pong, trivia, and bar top video games. They also have the longest bar in Texas and attractive bartenders.

All About Montrose Houston Nightlife and Community

Montrose is the area of Houston that is supported by the gay and lesbian community. There are so many great restaurants, night clubs and shops to go to. Many of the bars and clubs are gay and lesbian friendly, but have no fear they allow anybody in. Clubs such as South Beach light up every Saturday night and pack in tons of Houston hotties from all over Houston. JR's is next to South Beach and keeps things fresh with the cute guys dancing around in their tighty whities and putting on a show.

When Saturday night turns into Sunday morning you can then find everybody at La Strada for their famous Sunday Brunch. The Sunday Brunch is not like any other (I guarantee). Here they house infamous Houston DJ John Tran aka Kung Fu Pimp that spins the hottest jams while young twenty something's dance around with their morning mimosas and Bellinis. If La Strada is too fast of a pace try Babba Yega's down the street. Their Sunday Brunch is my favorite!

After a morning of brunching don't forget to try some shopping. No, you will not find the Gap here, instead there's a row of boutiques and vintage stores. At Buffalo Exchange you can even trade that old dress for a new tee and purse; for they buy your old clothes and resell them. Most of the stores in Montrose are buy/sell kinds of businesses. They even have a Half Price Books. Montrose is also the mecca for tattooing in Houston. Most of my friends got their tattoos here.

There's no Starbucks here, but there is The Empire Cafe. Neighborhood residents have been coming here for years. Empire Cafe offers some great dishes, fabulous coffee, and great people watching.

Montrose is a hipper part of town. There is an "I don't care what anybody thinks" kind of attitude. Montrose has edge and so do the people who frequent here. Try a night out at Poison Girl. It is a great hip bar located in the center of Montrose. There are old pictures of pin-up girls on the walls as well as dark red walls, dark lighting, hipster bartenders and old pinball machines...now what is hipper than that?

New to Houston?

If you're new to Houston you may be wondering what the nightlife is like. There really is no way to describe it in just a few summary paragraphs. Each neighborhood is unique and each venue has it's own flare.

I recommend that you start by reading over the general profile of the neighborhoods. There's sure to be something to fit your taste.

The most popular are Midtown, Washington Avenue, and Montrose.
