Houston Comedy ClubsThe 5 Best Comedy Clubs in Houston
Houston Comedy Clubs: With Houston being the 4th largest city in the U.S. you would think we would have an abundance of comedy clubs. But we don't. There are only a handful of Houston comedy clubs, but they will provide you a really fun evening. So it is worth visiting them all. New comedy clubs seem to close as quickly as new night clubs in Houston so be sure to call ahead and verify information about any comedy club that you hear about that's not described here. The best comedy clubs have been around for years and provide quality entertainment.
Radio Music Theatre, known as "Houston's Home Team for Comedy," is the most unique, and arguably the best, comedy club in Houston. Radio Music Theatre was founded by a husband and wife team in 1985 and now includes several other musicians, actors and actresses. The shows may be sketch comedy, full length plays, comedic music, satire on current events or some combination of these. One of their more popular running sketches "The Fertle Family" comedies is based on the founders own family in rural Iowa. They have also produced several very successful comedies based on political events. Their work has been featured on NBC Nightly News, Saturday Night Live, MTV and The Today Show. Beer, wine and desserts are served.
By far the best traditional style stand-up comedy club in Houston is Improv Comedy Club in the Marq-E Entertainment Complex on Katy Freeway. Their comedians are usually hilarious, although anything but family friendly. They serve reasonably good food and strong alcoholic drinks. They have a nice bar to relax at if you arrive early for your show. It's convenient that they are located in the Marq-E Complex where you can walk right next door to Drink Houston for dancing after the show or Dave and Busters for games.
Laff Stop is another great Houston comedy club featuring local and nationally known stand-up comedians. The venue itself is not quite as nice as Improv Comedy and the showroom looks like it wasn't designed for the purpose; and likely it wasn't since this comedy club is in a shopping strip. However, the comedians are still funny and the drinks are strong. Laff Stop also has a full dinner menu. Wednesday's are Open Mic Night and admission is free. They offer comedic defensive driving on Saturday's. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of needing a defensive driving class then you might as well make it fun. Guava Lamp (a gay bar) is in the same shopping complex and is a good option for entertainment after the show.
The Comedy Showcase is the oldest and most affordable comedy club in Houston. They've been in business since 1983, which tells you that their choice of comedians must be good. Tickets to their shows are $15 as opposed to an average of $20 for other Houston comedy clubs and their alcoholic drinks are also cheaper. They give guests a card to fill out at the show for a chance to win free tickets, and the odds seem to be very good. Their food menu includes a variety of fried appetizers and snacks. I've heard very good things about their breaded Zucchini, so it may be worth a try. They also offer Defensive Driving classes and the unique opportunity for anyone to plan a comedy fund-raiser for their favorite cause.
Another unique Houston comedy show is Comedy Sportz. This is a family friendly comedy competition that began in Houston in 1990. They have a regular troupe of 35 comedians. Six "players" compete 3 on 3 in each show in a fast- paced improv competition of scenes, games, and songs that encourage crowd participation. They also offer comedy classes and workshops and will perform at private parties, even in your home! You can join their birthday club for free admission during your birth month. Beer, wine, soft drinks, water, and light snacks are served. Written for HNS by Kristy Venable
