Downtown Houston Nightlife

"A few gems among a lot of duds."

downtown houston

Downtown Houston nightlife presents a big challenge; finding the really good places while avoiding all the rowdy young college students and hyped club promotions.

When people think of a night out in a big city they generally think of going downtown. Not true in Houston. I've heard that downtown Houston was once the happening spot, but that was before my time!

The young professional crowd generally goes somewhere else, like Midtown, Washington Avenue, or Montrose.

These are a few of the good Downtown Houston bars and nightclubs:

B.U.S. Bar is a downtown bar directly across from Minute Maid Park and the place to be before and after an Astros game. They have pool tables, darts, and big screen TVs.

EighteenTwenty Lounge is a martini lounge located downtown next to Minute Maid Park. They have Pac Man Fever nights where they open their doors to the Joysticks game store next door and you can play the games.

Venue is a huge downtown nightclub with a unique, classy atmosphere. They have DJs, live music, dancers, and a large VIP section. Friday night is Latin night and a DJ spins on Saturdays.

Here's an example of the typical downtown club scene.
(especially in the nightclubs along Main Street
and places like Pink Monkey and Toc Bar.)

Be Warned: Most online descriptions of
Downtown Houston Nightlife are not accurate.

Here's a great example.

Read the description of Club Glo by www.houstondowntown.com. "Glo offers an elaborate decor, an inviting atmosphere, and good music. A diversely stylish crowd provides a unique alternative to the norm."

And from ClubZone, "Glo delivers top notch entertainment with global appeal, a selection of spirits for the most discerning and sophisticated palate. A level of service parallel to the most regal nightclubs in the world."

Now you judge from the video:

I picked this place because I believe it's no longer in business. But yet it is still listed on reputable websites. And I can say from experience that the atmosphere is typical of many downtown clubs.

The point is, don't believe everything you read about a place just because it's written on an official looking website, especially when it comes to downtown Houston nightlife!

Problems with Going Out Downtown

  • Many clubs downtown cater to an 18 and up crowd.
  • Parking is difficult and expensive. Be careful not to get towed!
  • Driving is really dangerous when the clubs let out with all the young intoxicated people..
  • The one-way streets can be confusing if you're not familiar with them.
  • You will likely encounter homeless people if you go to Main Street. If you are uncomfortable with this then I recommend going elsewhere.
